The season’s opening tournament once again saw the Denver boys travel to Dallas to defend their Magpie Invitational championship of 2002. Playing against the Austin Crows, the KC Power and the host Dallas Magpies, the Doggies ran out victors in three straight, allowing only 5 goals against the entire weekend. (Report in archives)

The next month, May was the annual KC tourney, and Denver easily defended its crown to win the tournament for the 5th consecutive year. Denver won all three games against Milwaukee, KC, and St Louis to run their 2003 record to 6-0.

In July, Vice Captain Benny Harling was named coach and Tim Hilditch was named captain. Vice Captain duties were assigned to Jim Baldwin and Dave Kennedy.

On July 19, Denver played host to one of the USAFL’s top sides, the New York Magpies. The ‘Pies were a division one semi-finalist in ’02, losing to eventual Bulldog grand-final-victims San Diego. A large contingent arrived from the Big Apple, and a full-on competitive match was expected.

New York brought a strong 20 men to the mile high city, and under sunny hot conditions, the Denver Bulldogs rolled to a 14.13(97) to 4.2 (26) victory.

In August, the Bulldogs traveled to beautiful Vancouver, Canada to play in a one day ‘mini tournament’ versus the host Cougars, the North west footy premiers of 2002, and the Seattle Cats (now Grizzlies), the only team Denver has played that it has never defeated.

The Bulldogs traveled only 14 players to Vancouver, and only 5 Aussies, facing the tough Seattle then Vancouver would be a challenge. An effort with heart was needed.

Denver won both games despite many players receiving injury (report in archives) and ran their 2003 record to a prefect 9-0. The three-point win over Vancouver was perhaps the greatest regular-season victory in club history. Denver now stands poised as it prepares for the 2003 USAFL Nationals in Kansas City. October 2003.

The Denver Bulldogs won the 2003 USAFL premiership on October 11/12 at Kansas City. The ‘Dogs defeated San Diego, Dallas, and New York in pool play, allowing only one goal against with two shutouts. Denver then defeated the Boston Demons in the Grand Final to take back-to-back flags and three in four years. Denver finished the season perfect again, 13-0. The Doggies continued their winning streak at 28 games.

Coach and Grand Final Best-on-grounder Benny Harling led the Bulldogs with confidence. His leadership and sacrifice was key in the team’s success. Another key Bulldog veteran, Matt Dainauski, was voted Best on Ground for the entire tournament. Indeed, 2003 was a season that defined the Denver Bulldogs. Many speculated the coaching change and controversy in mid season would be the downfall of the ‘Dogs, but the players, coaches, captains and supporters proved the Denver Bulldogs Football club to be the greatest in the USAFL. After only five seasons the Red White and Blue have won three premierships. Quite and accomplishment that has grown from a casual kick in the park.
