Club History - 2001

All incumbent club officers were retained for the 2001 season.

Team Captain:Rich Mann
Vice Captain:Ben Harling

The Bulldogs opened their defense of the USAFL championship in May with another (their third) unbeaten KC tournament title. (Report in archives) In June, the first ever “Champions Cup” was held in Cincinnati. This tournament was for past and present USAFL Champions. An undermanned but determined Bulldog contingent fought galliantly, but came up short in the only un-victorious tournament in Bulldogs history, losing to Cincinnati at the siren and Boston in a hard fought battle. (Report in archives)

In only their second home game ever, Denver hosted the Dallas Magpies in the “July like a Dog” football festival. (Report in archives) The Dogs played another International Rules match versus the Gaels to complete the day of footy. August was a busy month. First it was a trip to Chicago to play in the Swans invitational. Denver won the flag with a 5-0 weekend, including two shutouts, a forfeit, and a convincing 92-6 victory over Cincinnati on their way to a Finals victory over Chicago. (Report in archives) Later that month, KC hosted the “Fall Classic” and Denver lost for the first (and only) time on KC soil. Wins over Dallas and KC resulted in second place. (Report in archives)

The 2001 USAFL nationals were in Washington DC. Denver lost to the eventual Champion San Diego Lions in the semi-final. The Bulldogs were 3-0 and easy winners of their pool, but were no match for a prepared and determined San Diego squad. After winning the flag in 2000, Denver finished third in the USAFL for the 2001 season. As preparations began for the 2002 season, changes were in the wind for the Bulldogs.

After two seasons in Denver, Captain Rich Mann left Denver to return to Australia. Rich played a large role in the club’s success and his impact will be felt (and missed) for a long time.

The 2001 US national team selected three Bulldogs to play in the first-ever overseas competition, the Atlantic Alliance Cup. The USA would compete against Canada, Denmark, Ireland and England. The one-week tournament was in London, England in October. Full forward Matt Dainauski, defender/forward Jim Baldwin, and defender Tom Ellis all played key roles in the USA’s second-place finish in the five-nation draw. Paul Renouf also was part of the delegation, selected as a field Umpire for the tournament.
